Paula's burp cloths

Man oh man this was a challenge for me. When I read this month's challenge was burp cloths I got very excited. There is a wonderful older woman in my ward, Mary Odell, who is a superb sewer, caner, gardener- you name it. She gives burp cloths to expectant mothers in the ward and I was lucky enough to receive some when Camille (my second/youngest) was born. These burp cloths are WONDERFUL and I still use them in my bag for wiping hands, faces, etc.

I thought I could just use hers as a pattern and it would be so easy-wrong. It was so hard. As you can tell there are so many curves to deal with that I was fighting my machine all the time. It was hard to tell when to move the fabric to begin the curves and to get it just so to make both sides symmetrical. There was lots of thinking, cutting, and tons of seam ripping involved therefore I made only 1 semi-decent one. The fabric is one side terry cloth and one side flannel.

After talking to some experienced seamstresses in the ward and Mary herself, I do have a better idea on how to go about making improvements. One suggestion was to get a circle foot which I plan on investing in one. I do plan on making more and have some hot pink terry cloth and black and white flannel print waiting on me.

Sister Odell's is the top one. Mine is the bottom(the orange/stripe one). Tell the difference?

I do plan on tweaking the pattern and hopefully will produce some nicer looking ones in the near future. I hope to eventually give them as gifts as well.

It's still cute, Paula! And, way to be adventurous and use an already made one as a pattern. I have only made things that are square/rectangular in shape without a pattern because I know I can handle them and probably won't mess them up.

I agree---I'm too nervous to do anything but the basics right now. These are super cute!

Love the fabric, Paula. Very brave to try something without a pattern or instructions!

Good job, Paula. I think it looks really good. I thought that kind would be easier for Katie, but I guess curves are more challenging than I realized. You did great!
