Mermaid Tail Blanket Tutorial

When Emily commented on my mermaid tail blanket pin that she needed to make one for Lauren, I knew that it would be the perfect Christmas present for the year I had their family.

A lot of the tutorials I saw were for knit or crochet, but I wanted to sew one. I ended up just looking at different pictures, and fin patterns, and came up with my own. I used some purple fleece I got on big sale from Hancock, and then various green/teal/sparkly tulle and satin-like fabric.

My assistant helped me know how big to make it. Really, though, I just kind of guessed and then cut a tail like shape. I wanted to make sure it would be big enough that Lauren could take it to college if it was still holding up by then.

I just found this pattern by googling mermaid tail fin or something like that.

When sewing the tail fin together, make sure to leave an opening so that you can turn it right side out and attach it to the fleece. After getting all the layers sewn together (it was a pain due to the fabric type), I turned it right side out and sewed some lines on it.
Make a gather to fit the fleece into the tail fin. Sew sew them together by top stitching the opening on the tail fin closed. I made sure to reinforce it knowing it would get a lot of pulling on it.

I opted to sew some of the same fabric I used for the tail around the waist to make a waist to the blanket. I'm pretty sure I sewed it onto the inside, turned it to the outside and then tacked it down in several places. I can't really remember. I do remember trying it out because I was so happy about it. So, go make one for your child. It is pretty easy.

Brooke would like this way too much. I should crochet her one. It looks good.
